Disney Devotionals: Calm in the Chaos
Welcome to the first post of my Disney Devotionals series! I decided to combine two of my favorite things for this post: Jesus and Disney World! I hope this series brings as much joy to you as it has to me. Now, let's get into the devotional.
Calm in the Chaos: A Lesson From The Mad Tea Party
Let's take a trip to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. Picture this:you're sitting in one of the spinning tea cups at saucers on the Mad Tea Party ride, trying to find a spot to focus on to keep from getting sick. (As a majorette, I learned how to "spot" to keep from getting dizzy while doing multiple spins). If you can't find a specific spot to focus on, you may get sick and lose that Mickey pretzel you just ate.
The tea cups around you are spinning out of control. Some conten a rider who is trying to slow it down, but another is spinning as fast as they can. There is music, bright colors, and chaos. So much chaos.
You're able to control your thoughts and focus on the ride, but you can't control other riders around you. You decide to place your focus on the person on the other side of your tea cup, so you can avoid being caught up in the chaos and keep from getting dizzy and sick. You've found your focus to save yourself from harm, but the chaotic tea cups and riders continue to spin all around you.
Your strong will allows you to block the chaos out, though.
But to the children in line, the chaos looks fun! Have you ever ridden a teacup with or beside of a child? They're always spinning as fast as they can, losing control, laughing, and having the best time! Isn't this what sin looks like?
Sin is messy and chaotic, but if it wasn't fun, no one would participate in it!
When we are surrounded by sin of the world, God is calling us to pull our focus back on Him. When life is chaotic and out of control, He is begging us to put Him back at the center of our focus and of our life.
In Christ, there is peace. In Christ, there is joy. In Christ, we can forget about the chaotic world around us as we sit at the throne and put our focus on Him.
When the world is spinning out of control, we must put our focus on Him, or we will get caught up in the chaos and sick from the sin.
When we start to feel overwhelmed by the chaos, He is calling us to leave the chaos at the door and enter in His presence.
Like we put our focus on a certain spot to refrain from getting sick while spinning, we should put our focus on Him when we are tempted to fall into sin.
We can't control those around us though. You can control the speed of your tea cup at the Mad Tea Party, but you can't control the speed of the one beside of you. When we are caught up in chaos out of our control, we should give it to Him and let Him use our chaotic story for His glory.
When we move our focus to Him, the chaos of the world will surround us, but it won't consume us or cause us to become sick with sin.
Now, the ride has stopped and you're getting out of your tea cup. You notice that the chaos followers your fellow riders who let their tea cup get out of control as they stumble around, dizzy from the attraction. Since you were able to keep your focus on something other than the chaos, you walk off unharmed.
Just like when you are surrounded by sin, but remained focused on God, you walk out of the situation unharmed. Your friends who let sin continue to consume them will see the side effects (dizziness from the rise), but you will be able to move on to the next thing that God places in front of you, or the next attraction at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. Your unshifted focus on Him has kept you save from harm and calm in the chaos.
Let's look at some verses that bring peace in the chaos:
Set your mind on things above, not earthly things. Colossians 3:2
Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10a
I keep my eyes on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Psalm 16:8
For God is not a God of confusion, but one of peace. 1 Corinthians 14:33a
What will you choose? the peace of God or the chaos of sin?
